Sedation Dentistry: Exploring the Different Options

Updated 12-19-2025

Sedation dentistry at Family Dentistry of Lakewood allows patients to feel relaxed and comfortable during dental procedures. Whether you experience dental anxiety, have a low pain threshold, or require extensive work, there are different sedation options to fit your needs. The three most common types of sedation are nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and IV sedation.

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Nitrous oxide is a mild sedative inhaled through a small mask over the nose. It takes effect quickly and helps you feel calm without putting you to sleep. Once the procedure is done, the effects wear off almost immediately, allowing you to drive yourself home. This option is often best for those with mild anxiety or those undergoing simple treatments like cleanings, fillings, or minor extractions. It’s also safe and commonly used for children.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation involves taking a prescribed pill, typically a benzodiazepine, before your appointment. This medication induces a more profound sense of relaxation than nitrous oxide, and you may feel drowsy but remain awake. Some patients may even doze off during treatment. Because the effects linger, you’ll need someone to drive you home afterward. Oral sedation is often an excellent option for those with moderate dental anxiety, a strong gag reflex, or those needing longer, more involved procedures.

IV Sedation

IV sedation is administered directly into your bloodstream, allowing the dentist to control the level of sedation throughout the procedure. It creates a more profound relaxation, and many patients remember little to nothing about their treatment. Recovery time is longer, and a companion must drive you home. IV sedation can be effective for patients with severe dental anxiety, complex treatment plans, or those who have difficulty getting numb with local anesthesia.

Which Option Is Right for You?

Choosing the right sedation depends on your anxiety level, medical history, and the complexity of your procedure. A thorough consultation with our team will determine the safest and most effective method for your needs, ensuring a stress-free and comfortable experience.
